Simple repeating colorwork of baby abalone with three-dimensional braids representing giant kelp. Squishy in worsted weight with long floats, perfect to keep you warm for long walks along chilly, misty, rocky shores. The cowl pattern is inspired by baby white abalone, an endangered species of ocean snails that are ecologically and culturally important. I’m one of the many scientists working to help save them.

Measurements
22 in circumference x 10 in tall
(Customizable in Option B)
Yarn
2-3 colors of worsted yarn
Any worsted weight yarn that you like to use for colorwork will work. I used an unknown stash yarn that appeared to be worsted weight for my MC, and two Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok worsted for my CC’s. Play around with whatever you have on hand! Sample uses approximately 160 yards MC (blue), 15 yards CC1 (green), and 45 yards CC2 (white)
Gauge
18 sts and 22 rounds per 4 in
Gauge is in colorwork in the round, using larger needles, after blocking. Gauge is not essential for this pattern, but will alter the size and yardage used.
Suggested needles
16”/40 cm or 20”/50cm circular needles in two sizes:
US 8/5.00 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge) for colorwork
US 6/4.0 mm (or 1-2 size(s) smaller than larger needle) for ribbing
Notions
Stitch markers, one in a different color for BOR. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
